Leo rose at 3 AM, unable to sleep. He walked into the kitchen, softly closed the door, then turned on the light. Reaching underneath the sink, he retrieved his hidden notebook.
He flipped through the drawings. They were strange, hallucinatory, obviously the work of a deranged mind. The idea of invisible monsters feeding on people's life force -- it was absurd. He stared at one drawing in particular and remembered how real it seemed at the time. His body shivered as he looked back into his own madness.
Leo remembered that Sam had a horror of insanity. "If she sees these pictures she'll drop me in a heartbeat."
Defiantly, he stuffed the notebook into the trash compactor. "This nightmare is over," he declared. "No more bullshit."
He took four pills and climbed back into bed. Snuggling against Sam's warm body, he felt safe and calm. In a few short minutes, Leo was dreaming of Vermont, green trees and lush meadows·
