Leo fished the pill vial from his coat pocket and popped the lid. The last precious pill spilled out of his hand. He tried to grab for it, dropping the books and papers. The pill vanished into the long grass.
He fell to his knees, raking through the grass with his fingers. Then he heard the roar of the lawnmower. Looking up, he saw the custodian waiting patiently for him to move out of his path. And behind him the monster hovered, waiting to strike.
Leo swiftly gathered up the books and papers and hurried to the car. His breath came in short gasps.
Safe inside the car, he sat frozen in the car seat. "I've got to keep it together," he muttered, gripping the steering wheel. He refused to look at the thing feeding on the lawnmower man. After several slow, deep breaths, Leo drove off.
The familiar drone of traffic was soothing. His hands unclenched as he paid attention to the road. Suddenly, a huge bulbous creature darted from behind a truck and leaped directly in front of his car.
He swerved and hit his brake. Horns blared and tires screeched all around him.
