„Stop! Get away! GET AWAY FROM HER!š shouted Leo, waving his arms. The creatures grudgingly shifted aside, still eating. Leo leaped on top of her wrapping his body around her. A human shield.
„Hang on honey. I won‚t let them get you.š The beings drew back, repulsed by his vitality. His back burned as the creatures hovered, poking, trying to push through him to the helpless child underneath.
„I‚m here now, honey. Slow it down.š
After a few minutes her gasping abated. She seemed to relax. Her eyes met his and she tried to smile.
Suddenly, Sam was standing in the bedroom door. „Amy!š she screamed, „My God Leo, what are you doing do her?„
Leo turned to sit up but a long articulated snout slipped under his arm and started sucking at Amy‚s neck. Leo drove it back and wrapped Amy tighter in his arms.
„She was having an attack.š He strained his neck to look at Sam. „I‚m shielding her.š
„Did you call 911?š
„No-they have no idea want they‚re dealing with. She‚ll be okay soon.š He propped himself up on his elbows. Amy‚s color was returning. She smiled weakly. „See, she‚s a lot better already. But I have to guard her.š
Sam glared at Leo, then ran out to make the call. Paramedics were there in minutes. Leo could see beasts hovering all around, waiting for him to turn Amy loose. „I‚ve got to keep holding her,š insisted Leo, „I‚ve got to go with her in the ambulance.š
„Like hell you will,š exploded Sam. „I‚m her mother, I‚ll go with her in the ambulance. Now get off my daughter and pack up!š
The paramedics pried Amy away, fitting her with oxygen. Leo knew it was useless to argue. His heart broke as creatures swarmed around the gurney, digging into their moveable feast. „I love you Honey!š he called as she was loaded into the ambulance. It screamed down the street trailing a tail of monsters like a kite.
