Without question, movie projection is a lost art. I say this as one who likes to see movies in theaters, projected on a big screen by a person who ideally knows what he or she is doing! However, my recent movie going has convinced me that today’s projectionists are not [...]

All Chearleaders Die

With a title like that you can be sure this video production is a far cry from LASSIE COME HOME. It’s an early effort by the talented Lucky McKee (of MAY and THE WOODS), a really stupid zombie gorefest that, if one is willing to shut one’s brain down for eighty minutes, is actually kind [...]

This once-banned Russian epic is a crazed exercise in historical revisionism centering on Grigori Rasputin, one of the Twentieth Century’s most fascinating personages. This film’s take on the man, as an out-and-out lunatic, is questionable to be sure, but it’s such an irresistibly delirious viewing experience that I was willing to go along with it. [...]

A psychological thriller centered on a young boy and his disturbed psycho-sexual fantasies, AFRAID OF THE DARK is a strange little film that’s admirably thoughtful and subdued in its approach, but not recommended for the easily disturbed!

Another case of a “lost” film that’s become an extremely sought-after item among horror buffs but, now that it’s finally been unearthed, turns out to be a disappointment. Sure, ABBY deserves credit for being one of the few all-black horror films to take itself and its viewers seriously, but that doesn’t change the fact that [...]

Come and See

This shattering, impressionistic Russian epic can be viewed as a hallucinatory depiction of the horrors of war, an unforgiving expose of Nazi atrocities that makes SCHINDLER’S LIST look like LASSIE COME HOME, or as a straightforward descent into madness. COME AND SEE is a visionary masterpiece in any interpretation, a film from which no viewer [...]

Cleopatra’s Second Husband

In my view this is the film SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE should have been, a wildly uneven yet irresistibly demented indie about seduction and obsession among a quartet of thirtysomethings. Funny, shocking and totally unpredictable, this is American filmmaking at its most inspired…although I’m still not sure what the title is supposed to mean.

Class of 99

What do you get when you pair Malcolm McDowell as the principal of a school, in the “future” year of 1999, with Stacey Keach and Pam Grier as android teachers on a killing rampage? A: Lots of ultra-violent fun, especially when the director is Mark L. Lester (CLASS OF 1984, COMMANDO).

I’ve always liked this John Carpenter directed Stephen King adaptation. Matter of fact, I’d say it’s one of Carpenter’s all-around best films, a darkly comedic haunted car chiller that’s dated extremely well.
